Adolf Hitler rise to power history essay

Essay by Daniel Kropf- 10L

Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany in 1933 as a result of his own cunning skills and good fortune. However, the main reason he came to power is because of his skills as a leader, his excellent public speaking, his brilliant propaganda and, his promises to the German people and the organisation of the Nazi party.

Adolf Hitler was an inspirational leader; once he gained power he managed to get all soldiers to salute him at all times. Hitler spoke to the German people in a way that made them feel as if he was talking to them only. In essence, he filled them with a hope they had not felt for a very long time. Many Hitler supporters felt that Hitler was their only hope to rebuild Germany to the greatness they had once had. In his many public ‘performances’, he would talk to different types of people, however he still managed to provide promises to them in regard to what he could offer them. The people felt as if Adolf Hitler understood their personal needs, and therefore pledged their confidence in him to run the country.

There are, of course, many other qualities that Adolf Hitler possessed which helped him in his rise to power. For example, there are the many promises that Hitler made to the German people in regard to what they would be gaining if they voted him into power. He made sure that there was a promise to please all German people, for everybody wanted something different. The main promises Adolf Hitler made are these:

  • He promised to solve all of Germany’s economic problems.
  • He said that he would build up the army to what it had once been and better, in order to be able to defend Germany but also to attack other weaker countries.
  • He told the people that he would ignore the treaty of Versailles, which was the very reason that Germany was in such a bad state economically: the treaty had essentially ruined Germany.
  • He assured the people that he could provide them with strong leadership skills, something they had been missing for a long time.
  • Finally, he swore that if voted into power, Hitler would make Germany great once again. This was one promise that all Germans felt good about: they wanted to be great again as much as Hitler did.

There is also the fact that the Nazi party presented the German public with masses of brilliant propaganda. This was masterminded by Josef Goebbels, the Nazi “minister for public propaganda and enlightenment”. This was displayed in such a way that it promoted the Nazis, saying such things as ‘Germany’s only hope is Hitler’. Some people will try to say that the reason for Hitler’s great political success lays in the weakness of the opposing parties: the Communist party and the Social Democratic party. Theses two parties were bitter enemies and would never join to try overcoming the Nazis together. This is true, however without Hitler’s great organisational skills, their weakness alone would not have guaranteed Adolf Hitler a free run to power. Some other arguments are that there was a fear of communism in Germany after what had happened in Russia with communism, which led to the German people voting for the Nazis not because they liked them, but because they didn’t want the communists to have power. This is a valid point, yet not entirely true. There was a fear of communism; however this is not the reason people voted for the Nazis. The Nazis provided great organisational skills, conducting enormous marches of SA troops through the street to persuade the people that they would e able to bring law and order to the streets of Germany. Also, the Nazis worked hard to deliver their message to the public through door-to-door campaigning and spreading leaflets.

Of course, some people will try to tell you that these were not the main reasons the Nazis rose to power: they will tell you that the NYSE crash was the main reason, along with a political deal with Papan, the ex-Chancellor of Germany. These events did help Adolf Hitler in his quest enormously, but they did not play as great a role as Hitler’s own actions in his rise to power.

All in all, Adolf Hitler came to be the most powerful man in Germany through hard work, clever ideas and organisation. Other factors did play a part, but not to the same extent.
