Network/Server Installation

The following recommendation outlines how a networked installation can be configured

1. Server Applications

On the network application server, create a directory called ‘PRACTICE SOFTWARE’

Set the permissions/rights for this directory to :

Option a)

Students = Read Only

Teachers = Read & Write

Option b)

If there is a third layer of security at the school and some teachers are also not permitted to change application data then this directory should be set as follows:

Students = Read Only

Teachers = Read Only

Administrator = Read & Write

Within this directory exists a file called ‘PCONFIGURATION’. This file also needs to be set as follows:

Teachers = Read & Write

From a standard workstation install the application into this directory on the server. Installation should be performed by some who has Read & Write permissions to the complete directory. ( the teacher in option ‘a’ or the administrator in option ‘b’).

This will load the following files on the server.

PRACTICE.EXE

PRACTICE.ICO

PSTATEMENTS

PRACTICE DOCUMENTATION - ADOBE.PDF

PRACTICE DOCUMENTATION – IE.HTML

<DIR> Sound

          Welcome.wav
          Goodbye.wav
          Incorrect.wav
          SessionEnd.wav
          PressStart.wav
          TooHigh.wav
          TooLow.wav
          NotAMatch.wav
          Congratulations.wav
          TimeExpired.wav
          Correct.wav

The HTML file also has a subdirectory which contains the images within this documentation.

On first usage a file named ‘PCONFIGURATION’ will be generated in the same directory as ‘PRACTICE.EXE’ and will contain the registered user name and serial key details for ongoing use.

The file PCONFIGURATION’ incudes file paths to 3 files and general ‘Administrator’ privileges that have been granted or removed for student usage and student personal configuration option.

The decision on where to store student information is dependant on how teachers intend to review results and the availability of individual student home directories.

2. Students Drives / Home Directory

Start the application and if it is the first time it is used, enter in the ‘User Name’ and ‘Serial Key’ when prompted. From the main menu select Configuration Settings. (this will take you to the ‘Configuration Student Settings’ screen)

Adjust the student settings to the desired configuration

Press the ‘Admin’ button to take you to the ‘Configuration Admin Setting’ screen.

Adjust the options that you will permit the students to do or change as desired.

Adjust the file paths for ‘SETTINGS’ and ‘RESULTS’ to point to the student home drives. The application will generate 2 files in this area to store the students own customised settings and results.

Press Save Defaults and exit the Admin menu

Press Save Defaults and exit the Student menu

Optionally all results can be logged to one file, however care should be taken to avoid letting individual students delete the common file. Network rights in this case should be set to read, write only on ‘PRESULTS’.

The third file path should point to any valid photo image file on the network. This was initially set aside as being a photo of the student of the week, however schools can include their own logo in place of a student image if desired.

3. Local Workstation

Additionally, each workstation requires the following files to be available locally in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory:

VB6STKIT.DLL

COMCAT.DLL

STDOLE2.TLB

ASYCFILT.DLL

OLEPRO32.DLL

OLEAUT32.DLL

MSVBVM60.DLL

COMDLG32.OCX

MSCOMCTL.OCX

MSSTDFMT.DLL

FM20.DLL

MCI32.OCX

SETUP.EXE

SETUP1.EXE

ST6UNST.EXE

VB6 RUNTIME and OLE Automation

These files are automatically installed on the workstation as part of the installation. These can be copied via any method desired to other workstations.

Entries in the Windows ‘START MENU’, shortcuts or links can be created as required and should point to ‘PRACTICE.EXE’ and the associated documentation files on the server.
