Young Einstein Mathematics Educational Software ContentsActivity Number 169Heading : Long MultiplicationDescription : Using Long Multiplication, multiply a 2 digit number by a single digit number.Aim/Questions : Perform the long multiplication by solving each section separately. Educational software theory used:Long Multiplication
There are several ways to tackle multiplying 2 large numbers. Here we look at the traditional method.
There are two other methods known as Box and Napier.
The traditional method is shown below: 23 x 46 = 1058
23 x 46 138 + 920 1058
You will need to do a multiplication line for every digit in the second number.
So, we do 2 sets of multiplication sums and a final addition sum to get the answer.
Follow the examples as we go along.
Step 1, multiply the top line by the ones digit (6) 23 x 46 138
Step 2, move to the second digit and since it is the ‘Tens’ units amount, put a zero to indicate it is ‘Tens’ units that we are working with. 23 x 46 138 0
Step 3, multiply the top line by the second digit (4) 23 x 46 138 920
Step 4, add the two answers 23 x 46 138 + 920 1058
Educational software Instruction :1. You need to work with one line at a time
2. Work out the answers then type them into the ‘Answer Boxes’ provided.
3. Click the ‘OK’ button when you have finished.
